This is going to be one of my favorites of the year, hands down. I can’t believe that I’ve put off reading this for as long as I have! I spent the entire day reading this book, unwilling to put it down because of how good it was. And let me tell you, this author is now one of my most favorite authors in the YA Fantasy world!

Twenty-third in line for the throne, Freya never dreamed she would become queen…

So sets the pace for an epic fantasy story in which Freya is a scientist; she creates and tries to make ideas that could better the world. Yet when she leaves the King’s party with her only friend, Naomi, to go to her labratory at home, she is waylaid later on by her father and the guards who informs her that the entire King’s court including the King had been poisoned…leaving her to remain as ruler for the kingdom of Epria.

Freya didn’t want to be Queen. She wanted to escape the country and study abroad, she wanted to make creations that could help those who needed it. She wanted freedom. But now she was stuck with ruling a country that was in debt, despite the jewels and gold lining the palace walls, and she had no one to trust except for her friend Naomi.

The plot goes on, and the story is woven at a rapid pace. I instantly liked Freya, and the other characters as well. Her father was a bit of an issue about halfway through the book, and I wanted to strangle him for being controlling and not listening to her because ‘she’s young and doesn’t know any better’ excuse.

The book left off on a bit of a cliffhanger, but it did wrap up the mystery of who killed the King and his court rather nicely. I found that Freya was a smart, fascinating character who tried to help the innocent as much as possible, even so far as making sure that the victims of the party were buried at the same time as the king himself. While she makes fans from the poor, the nobles begin to question her right and power in controlling the throne. But Freya doesn’t care, she’s just trying to make the world a better place for all, and not just the rich. Freya-you are awesome!

Did I mention that Freya also has an adorable fluffy cat in this book called Dagny? When faced with men coming to kill her, she starts to run off-but goes back to rescue her cat! How cool is that?!

There is so much to love about this book, that I can’t even begin to describe every scene and character. The king’s bastard son, for example, Fitzroy, is at first a bit of an ass, but later on we see him being a hero and kind of an adorable one at that. And Naomi is the best friend that I wished everyone could have.

If you haven’t yet read this book, you really need to. It’s a fun, adventurous read, and it’s a fast enough plot you can finish it in an afternoon, provided you aren’t too busy with real life as well.

I give this book 5/5 stars, and now I’m off to find another book by this author to add to my immediate ‘must have’ wish list.

Until next time,
